INTRODUCTION

HELP NEPAL Network (HeNN) is a global charity run on a fully voluntary basis bringing together individuals who love Nepal together, to contribute towards health and education in the remote parts of the country. The volunteers include people from all walks of life. The aim of the Network is to encourage Nepalis and those with an interest in Nepal, around the world to contribute and provide assistance in the fields of health, education and emergency relief.

The first two chapters of the Network were established in the UK and Nepal simultaneously in late 1999 and since then the Network has expanded to nearly a dozen countries. Now the chapters in Australia, the US, the UK and Nepal are registered either as a charity or as a non-profit making organisation in the respective countries. HeNN groups or representatives are also active in Austria, Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Russia and Sweden. The organisation is in the process of expanding its network in other countries provided that those interested abide by the HeNN guidelines.

The launch of HELP NEPAL Network was an attempt to demonstrate how a collective effort of every Nepali and others interested in the country could make a difference in the lives of many in Nepal. It was also a realisation of the fact that besides being in a much more privileged position compared to that of most fellow citizens in Nepal, only a few Nepalis were doing something to help the country of their birth; whereas, many non-Nepalese were engaged in philanthropic activities in Nepal and virtually all Non-Governmental Organisation in the country were also being financed by foreign donors. In such a situation it was thought that it would be only appropriate to encourage the large and resourceful pool of expatriate Nepalis to contribute to Nepal as much as they could, instead of again looking for foreign donors. Hence, Nepalis are on the centre of the Network' s activities, though we warmly welcome any help and donation from other communities.

HELP NEPAL Network-Nepal, based in Kathmandu, supervises and co-ordinates the Network's projects in Nepal. It consists of a small group of dedicated volunteers without whose sincerity and dedication the Network could not have achieved what it has. HeNN-Nepal does not only co-ordinate with the Network abroad, but also works towards encouraging a sense of giving locally to support the Network's projects. For example, the HeNN teams abroad encourage Nepalis to " have a can of beer or a carton of juice less in a month and donate the savings to the fund " and HeNN-Nepal encourages Nepalis at home to " have a plate of momo and a few cups of tea less in a month and donate the savings to the fund ."

As the Network's administrative costs are sponsored, each penny donated goes directly to the targeted area.

If you are interested in helping us in any way, please get in touch with any of the Network chapters. HELP NEPAL expects your encouragement and support.
